ISO 14001 Certification - Environmental management system

IISO 14001 is the international standard for an environmental management system. It helps an organisation to systematically manage the environmental aspects associated with its activities, products and services, to fulfil its compliance obligations and to strive to improve its environmental performance. ISO 14001 certification demonstrates, through an independent assessment carried out by a certification body, that the organisation’s environmental management system complies with the requirements of the applicable standard. SRAC, a certification body accredited by RENAR (certificate no. SM 004), offers audit and certification services for environmental management systems in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard. The certificates issued are internationally recognised, through the accreditation of RENAR, a signatory to the IAF-MLA international agreement, as well as through SRAC’s partnership with IQNET (The International Certification Network).

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001:2026 is the international standard for environmental management systems (Environmental Management System). It provides organizations with a structured framework for identifying and managing environmental aspects, fulfilling compliance obligations, managing risks and opportunities, and continually improving environmental performance.

The ISO 14001 standard is applicable to any organization, regardless of size or field of activity.

What is an environmental management system?

An environmental management system enables an organization to systematically address the relationship between its activities and the environment.

Depending on the organization’s context and activities, the system may include:

  • identification of environmental aspects;
  • evaluation of environmental aspects and determination of significant aspects;
  • identification and management of compliance obligations;
  • identification of relevant risks and opportunities;
  • establishment of environmental objectives;
  • definition of responsibilities and operational controls;
  • monitoring and evaluation of environmental performance;
  • management of emergency situations;
  • evaluation of results and adoption of improvement measures.

The purpose of the system is not merely to have documented information, but to ensure the effective operation of a management system that supports the organization in managing its environmental responsibilities and improving environmental performance.

What are environmental aspects?

Environmental aspects are the elements of an organization’s activities, products or services that interact or may interact with the environment – for example, energy and water consumption, air emissions, waste generation, discharges to water, noise or other forms of pollution. Each environmental aspect results in an environmental impact, and the organization must identify these aspects and prioritize them according to the significance of their impact.

Environmental aspect and environmental impact

Environmental aspect and environmental impact are two distinct concepts.

An environmental aspect is an element of an activity, product or service that can interact with the environment. An environmental impact is the change produced in the environment as a result of this interaction.

For example, energy consumption may represent an environmental aspect, while greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy consumption represent a potential environmental impact.

This distinction is important for identifying, evaluating and managing environmental aspects within the management system.

What are compliance obligations?

ISO 14001 uses the concept of compliance obligations for requirements that the organization must or chooses to comply with in relation to its environmental management system. These include applicable legal and regulatory requirements, permits and other relevant regulatory instruments, requirements assumed through contracts, and other relevant requirements.

The organization must determine its applicable compliance obligations, take them into account within the management system and periodically evaluate their fulfilment.

ISO 14001 certification does not replace environmental permits or other legal obligations applicable to the organization’s activities.

ISO 14001:2015 and transition to ISO 14001:2026

The standard has been revised, and the new edition, ISO 14001:2026, was published in April 2026.

Organizations certified according to the 2015 edition have a 3-year transition period (until April 2029) to transition to ISO 14001:2026. After this date, certifications according to ISO 14001:2015 will become invalid.

ISO 14001:2026 and climate change

The update is not merely an editorial revision, but a strategic step towards aligning organizations with current climate challenges.

The new ISO 14001:2026 standard retains the proven framework that companies already rely on, while introducing essential clarifications and a more user-friendly structure.

What is new in ISO 14001:2026?

The update focuses on turning environmental commitments into structured actions and measurable results. The main areas of change are:

  • Alignment with global priorities: Increased attention is given to climate change, biodiversity and resource efficiency.
  • Seamless integration: The standard is now better aligned with other ISO management systems through the adoption of the Harmonized Structure.
  • Digitalization: The role of digital solutions, such as AI and data analysis, in monitoring and reporting environmental performance in real time is officially recognized.

Key changes by clause and their impact

The revision refines requirements throughout the management system, with an emphasis on proactivity and transparency:

  • Context of the Organization (Clause 4): External factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and ecosystem health must now be explicitly considered. In addition, the scope of the EMS must reflect a life-cycle approach.
  • Leadership (Clause 5): Greater emphasis is placed on the personal involvement of top management and on fostering a culture of responsibility. The environmental policy must now be accessible to all interested parties.
  • Planning (Clause 6): A new clause (6.3) on management of change has been introduced, requiring a structured approach to changes that may affect the EMS.
  • Operation (Clause 8): Operational control more clearly extends to suppliers and outsourced processes, encouraging sustainability throughout the supply chain.
  • Performance Evaluation (Clause 9): An important new requirement is that each internal audit must have defined objectives, in addition to its scope and audit criteria.

Benefits of ISO 14001 certification

ISO 14001 certification provides concrete benefits:

  • systematic management of environmental aspects;
  • improved environmental performance;
  • gaining and maintaining market share by promoting a “green” organizational image;
  • demonstrating genuine environmental performance to customers and other interested parties;
  • attracting ethical investments;
  • identifying and reducing environmental risks and, consequently, insurance costs;
  • reducing costs through more efficient use of resources and reducing the risk of environmental accidents;
  • compliance with environmental legal obligations and reduced risk of sanctions;
  • the possibility of integration with other management systems, such as ISO 9001 or ISO 45001.

.

Is environmental certification mandatory?

ISO 14001 environmental certification is not mandatory. However, it should be distinguished from an environmental permit, which is a separate legal requirement for certain activities. In practice, ISO 14001 certification often becomes a de facto requirement: in tenders and public procurement, in relationships with major customers or customers in regulated sectors, in supply chains that impose environmental standards on suppliers, as well as when an organization wants to strengthen its reputation and environmental responsibility. Thus, although it is not required by law, ISO 14001 certification is often a condition for winning contracts and accessing new markets.

How to obtain ISO 14001 certification with SRAC

The ISO 14001 certification process involves auditing the environmental management system against the requirements of the standard.

Certification stages

  1. Submission of a request for quotation and establishment of the contractual details.
  2. A two-stage certification audit: documentation review and on-site assessment of how the environmental management system operates.
  3. Resolution of any nonconformities and implementation of corrective actions.
  4. Issuance of the ISO 14001 certificate, valid for 3 years, subject to the completion of annual surveillance audits.
  5. Recertification audit (renewal of certification), extending the validity of the certificate for a new 3-year cycle.

Cost of ISO 14001 certification

The cost of ISO 14001 certification depends on the field of activity, number of employees, complexity of processes and number of sites. To find out the exact cost of ISO 14001 certification, the best solution is to request a personalized quotation.

ISO 14001 in an integrated management system

One of the major advantages of ISO 14001 is its alignment with the high-level structure (Annex SL) of other management standards, such as ISO 9001 (quality management system) or ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management system).

Integration enables the organization to manage, within a common framework, elements such as policy, objectives, processes, responsibilities, internal audit, performance evaluation and improvement.

For organizations that hold or are pursuing multiple certifications, an integrated approach can simplify the management of management systems and the audit process.

Who is ISO 14001 intended for?

ISO 14001 is intended for any organization that wishes to responsibly manage its environmental impact, regardless of size or field of activity. It is particularly relevant for companies in manufacturing, construction, energy, transport, services or public administration, as well as for any organization participating in tenders, working with customers with stringent environmental requirements, or seeking to reduce its environmental footprint and operational costs.

Frequently asked questions

What does ISO 14001 certification mean?

ISO 14001 certification is confirmation, by an independent accredited certification body, that an organization’s environmental management system meets the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard. It demonstrates that the organization controls its environmental impact and pursues continual improvement of environmental performance.

Do I need an environmental permit to obtain ISO 14001 certification?

An environmental permit and ISO 14001 certification are different things. An environmental permit is a legal requirement for certain activities, while ISO 14001 certification is voluntary and demonstrates the existence of an environmental management system. Compliance with legal obligations, including holding the required permits, is nevertheless part of the standard’s requirements.

What is new in ISO 14001:2026 and when do I need to transition?

ISO 14001:2026, published in April 2026, incorporates the amendment concerning climate change and clarifies a number of requirements, with an emphasis on context, life cycle and leadership. Organizations certified according to the 2015 edition have a 3-year transition period (until 2029), allowing the transition to be planned within the regular audit cycle.

How long is an ISO 14001 certificate valid?

An ISO 14001 certificate is valid for 3 years, subject to successful completion of annual surveillance audits. If the certificate is to be renewed, a recertification audit (renewal of certification) is performed at the end of the certification period.

What is the difference between ISO 14001 and ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 is the standard for quality management systems, focusing on customer satisfaction and the organization’s processes, while ISO 14001 addresses the environmental management system, i.e. the organization’s impact on the environment. The two standards have a common structure and can be implemented together as an integrated management system.

How much does ISO 14001 certification cost?

The cost varies depending on the field of activity, number of employees, complexity of processes and number of sites. For an exact price, we recommend requesting a personalized quotation.

Is environmental management system certification mandatory for public tenders?

It is not mandatory by law, but it is frequently required in the specifications of public tenders and procurement procedures as evidence of responsible environmental management. Authorities may use it either as an eligibility requirement for participation or to award additional points as part of the technical and financial evaluation. In many cases, ISO 14001 certification thus becomes a condition for participating in or winning a tender.

How do you obtain ISO 14001 certification?

Obtaining certification for an environmental management system (ISO 14001) involves two major phases: internal implementation and an external certification audit performed by an accredited certification body. Choose a certification body (e.g. SRAC), which verifies in stages whether your organization is ready for certification:

  • Certification audit – Stage 1: the scope of the management system, relevant processes and available documented information are reviewed.
  • Certification audit – Stage 2 (on-site): the audit evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of the environmental management system and how the organization applies ISO 14001 requirements to the activities included in the certification scope. This includes evaluating processes, responsibilities, operational controls, environmental aspects, compliance obligations, objectives and system results.

In other words, the auditors visit the company’s sites (factories, offices, warehouses) to verify on site how environmental procedures are applied. Waste management, the condition of equipment and the response to emergency situations (e.g. accidental spills) are checked, and interviews with personnel are conducted.

If no major nonconformities are identified (or after those identified have been addressed), the certification body issues the ISO 14001 certificate, valid for 3 years.

In Years 1 and 2, surveillance audits are conducted to confirm continued compliance with the standard and the effective operation of the system.

At the end of the cycle, a recertification audit is performed to continue the certification.
