A successful organization should:
| |
identify all the environmental aspects of its activities, products and/or services, in all the locations it operates; |
| |
|
| |
use a logical and objective methodology to prioritize these aspects, based on the importance of their impact on the environment; |
| |
|
| |
focus its management system towards the improvement and minimization of such significant impacts on the environment. |
By carrying out its processes, manufacturing its products or providing its services, every organization uses natural resources and non-regenerable energy sources and, at the same time, generates by-products as wastes.
The implementation and certification of an environmental management system represents a systematic approach to manage the environmental aspects of an organization. The environmental management system is an useful tool, enabling the organizations of any size or type to control the impact of their activities, products, services on the environment.
ISO 14001:2004 requires an organization to state what it is doing in terms of controlling and reducing its impact on the environment; to practice what it has stated in its environmental policy; to record the facts and to apply the lessons learned.
